Tomatin 2011 Vintage Oloroso Sherry Cask Matured
Score: 70
This was one of the more expensive whiskies in the lineup, and the room went into it expecting something big, rich, and fully formed. The nose certainly encouraged that optimism. It opened with classic sherry warmth, rich, sweet, and inviting, the kind of aroma that immediately gets people leaning in. A few tasters genuinely loved everything about that first impression: deep fruit, polished sweetness, and a sense of richness that promised a lot. But once it moved from nose to palate, the whisky didn’t quite carry that momentum. The flavours were pleasant, recognisably sherried, and easy enough to drink, but the transition felt incomplete for several people. The palate didn’t deliver the same depth or excitement the nose hinted at, leaving some tasters feeling let down after such a strong start. It was good, no one argued that, but it didn’t quite reach the level the aroma suggested. The finish followed the same pattern. It arrived quickly, faded quickly, and didn’t offer much to unpack. A few people described it as a whisky that slips away before you’ve had a chance to figure out what it’s trying to say. Others still enjoyed the straightforward sherry character which was the vibe, but even they acknowledged it wasn’t the most complete or expressive dram of the night. In the end, the 2011 Oloroso Vintage was a whisky with a lovely nose and a solid, drinkable profile, but it didn’t quite justify its higher price tag in the context of the tasting. It excited early, delivered comfortably, but never fully followed through, a good whisky that felt like it stopped just short of being great. *CLUB NOTES* "What can you do, when the lovely nose couldn't get carried through?" "Love everything about this rich beautiful dram" "Yup... Sherry... yum" "Good but not quite complete. The nose gets you a little bit excited, but the taste lets you down pretty quickly and hence the finish isn’t the most fun. Don’t get me wrong though, you can drink it, it’s just hard to appreciate it."
