Tomatin 12 years Cognac Cask

Score: 70

Tasted: April 2026 | Rank: 5 | 3rd Whisky Tasting
Region: Highlands

Tomatin’s 12‑year Cognac Cask finish landed in the middle of the pack on the night — a whisky that people generally liked, even if it didn’t quite push itself into the memorable tier. The nose set the tone: gentle, subtle, almost too restrained for some. A few tasters were left wanting more weight or definition in the aroma, especially compared to the brighter noses elsewhere in the lineup. But once it hit the palate, the whisky shifted gears. The texture turned noticeably creamy, with that soft, rounded sweetness Tomatin does well, and the Cognac influence added a layer of interest without overwhelming the spirit. Most people agreed it was good, enjoyable, balanced, pleasant, but not the kind of whisky that demanded attention. The cask finish did bring something different, though: a slightly drier, firmer finish than expected. That closing note surprised a few tasters, adding a bit more grip and structure than the nose suggested. Overall, the Cognac Cask 12 was the quiet achiever of the tasting. Smooth, creamy, and easy to drink, with a finish that showed more character than the opening suggested. It didn’t stand out as something special, but it held its own and delivered a solid, steady experience from start to finish. *CLUB NOTES* "Nose was too light for me but a very creamy taste." "Pretty good.. but not special" "Interesting cask influence, the finish is dry and stronger than expected."
